Father Christmas in Britain

Do you know Father Christmas used to be dressed in green? He was originally part of an old English midwinter festival, a sign of the returning spring and he was known as “Sir Christmas”.

Father Christmas is called different names around the world. The most popular name is Santa Claus (American name). The version of Santa Claus in Britain is Father Christmas and he is dressed in a red suit outlined in white. His home is in the North Pole and he makes all the toys from there.

Children write letters to him to tell what they would like for Christmas. The most traditional way to send the letters is to throw them into the back of the fireplace. The draught then carries the letters up the chimney to Father Christmas.

How do you write to Father Christmas?

  2. Hi Marta, I like your post about Santa Claus, may be could be better or more complete if you say how began this tradition with San Nicolas and you add why now Santa Claus is in red (because of cocacola company) but only for older students of Primary. I like very much your letter because they have to remember some good things they have done, that is the porpoise of receiving presents. Congratulations for your blog!
    Best regards, Laura.
